Five injured after ferocious winds and severe storms rip through college baseball game, sending tents airborne

GRANVILLE, West Virginia – Five people were injured after powerful wind gusts sent tents flying during severe storms that swept through a West Virginia University baseball game Saturday.

Thousands of fans packed Kendrick Family Ballpark in Granville on Saturday, but their hopes of watching the Mountaineers punch their ticket to Omaha were temporarily put on hold as dangerous severe storms swept through the sold-out venue.

During the weather delay, a powerful wind gust sent a large tent flying and carried it across a nearby parking lot, creating a chaotic scene outside the stadium.

According to the West Virginia University Police Department, five people were transported to a hospital for treatment following the incident.

With the Mountaineers just one win away from clinching the program's first-ever trip to the Men's College World Series, hundreds of fans gathered along Randy's Ridge, the grassy hillside beyond Kendrick Family Ballpark where some of WVU baseball's most devoted supporters watch the action.

Lined with dozens of tents and packed with fans, the popular viewing area quickly turned chaotic when powerful wind gusts swept through the sold-out stadium, sending tents airborne and scattering spectators.

Numerous first responders were on scene for the game and provided immediate medical aid to injured spectators.

James Sanders was on Randy's Ridge when the chaos ensued, and said, "It was intense, and we went right into survival mode."

With severe weather warnings in place and urges from stadium personnel to evacuate and seek shelter, Sanders said roughly 10 people huddled under a small tent. When a dangerous gust ripped the large white Mountaineer Athletic Club tent, the massive tent hurled right towards their tent.

"We were picking our chairs up and getting ready to leave, and then the gust came in and picked the tent up and then everything went sideways," Sanders said.

Sanders was one of roughly a dozen that became trapped under the tent when the large white tent crashed into them.

According to Sanders, the storms left numerous people injured and first responders acted quickly to aid those impacted by the massive tent once the severe weather had passed.

After the weather delay, play resumed and the Mountaineers finished off the Cal Poly Mustangs in dominant fashion, cruising to a 17–1 victory, sending West Virginia University to the Men's College World Series for the first time in program history.

"While it was a great day for Mountaineer baseball, all of Mountaineer Nation's thoughts are with those who were involved," WVU Athletics said in a statement.

It's been a hot week in the Northeast, with the heat providing ammunition for a round of severe storms targeting the region this weekend.

On Saturday, severe storms are likely across an expansive area stretching from the eastern Great Lakes into New England ahead of a cold front heading into the Northeast.

A very large level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk exists for portions of Indiana all the way into New Hampshire on Saturday.

Another much more widespread level 1 threat stretches up into Maine and extends all the way into parts of southern Michigan and eastern Illinois.

NORTHERN PLAINS BRACE FOR EXPLOSIVE WEEKEND STORMS WITH DAMAGING WINDS, HAIL THREAT

Major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor, including Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Columbus, Ohio, and Baltimore, will be under some type of severe weather threat.

The FOX Forecast Center said the storms are driven by daytime heating ahead of the cold front that's moving into the Northeast Saturday evening.

Damaging wind gusts and large hail are the main concern with these storms.

The FOX Forecast Center warned that those heading to the beaches along Long Island and the Jersey Shore this weekend should be wary of an elevated rip current threat because of the gusty winds and rough surf.

On Sunday, showers will linger across the region.

Temperatures return to average in the 70s through the end of the work week, when temperatures climb back into the 80s and 90s on Thursday.

National park ranger dies while patrolling America's tallest peak

MOUNT MCKINLEY, Alaska — A National Park Service employee has died while patrolling Mount McKinley in Alaska on Thursday afternoon.

Officials said an employee on climbing patrol died around 2 p.m. after falling into a crevasse near 14,000 Foot Camp atop the mountain.

The ranger, identified as Robin Pendery of Enumclaw, Washington, was a seasonal mountaineering ranger. She first joined the Denali mountaineering staff in 2024, where she supported climber safety, emergency response and mountaineering operations on North America's highest peak.

The National Park Service said they immediately responded to the incident but despite rescue efforts, the employee did not survive.

"We are heartbroken by the loss of a member of our Denali family," Superintendent Brooke Merrell said in a statement. Today, we mourn the loss of a valued colleague, friend and teammate. Our thoughts are with Robin’s family and loved ones."

The incident is under investigation. No additional information was immediately available.

Pendery’s death at Mount McKinley comes just one week after a separate disaster claimed the lives of three Latvian climbers.

During that incident, four members of a seven-person expedition plummeted near Denali Pass. It's known as one of the most hazardous stretches of the mountain, according to FOX News Digital.

The National Park Service said they are focused on supporting the employee's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

The Eastern Pacific is already busy with tropical activity less than a month into hurricane season, as the National Hurricane Center continues monitoring two areas to watch hot on the heels of the first named storm of the season.

While Amanda has weakened to a tropical depression, the Eastern Pacific isn't slowing down. Forecasters are tracking two additional areas of interest that could become the basin's next tropical cyclones.

Tropical Depression Amanda is moving west at 5 mph with winds at 35 mph and is forecast to continue to gradually weaken into a remnant low by Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TROPICAL DEPRESSION, TROPICAL STORM, AND HURRICANE?

A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph.

Invest 92E also has high chances of development over the next seven days.

The NHC said if Invest 92E remains offshore, it could become a tropical depression by late weekend or into early next week.

Heavy rainfall is likely across Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala with this system.

Sea surface temperatures near Mexico and farther west into the open Pacific are currently running about 2 to 3 degrees above average — favorable conditions for tropical formation.

These temperatures are consistent with a developing super El Niño climate pattern that is expected to play a dominant role this hurricane season, likely increasing tropical activity in the Eastern Pacific, while simultaneously suppressing tropical development in the Atlantic.

Have you ever wondered what it looks like inside the eye of a hurricane? A company called Saildrone will continue to show us a firsthand perspective by sending uncrewed vessels into extreme storms, helping scientists better understand how hurricanes form and intensify.

For the fifth consecutive hurricane season, Saildrone will deploy a fleet of uncrewed surface vehicles to monitor the harshest ocean conditions to gather vital data on the rapid intensification of brewing storms.

Since 2021, Saildrone has been on the frontlines supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) effort to better understand tropical cyclones.

NEXT TROPICAL THREAT LURKS NEAR MEXICO AS TROPICAL STORM AMANDA CHURNS IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC

This summer, Saildrone will deploy 10 Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) that will collect oceanographic and meteorological data in real time.

The 23-foot-long vessel is designed to handle the harshest seas the Earth has to offer, and is equipped with a suite of sensors to measure wind speed and direction, air, surface and sub-surface temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, salinity and wave height and period.

These battle-proven USVs have seen some of the worst extreme weather in recent years – rolling with the punches during extreme hurricane conditions during notable storms like Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Ian, to name just a few.

From August to November, the peak months of hurricane season, the Saildrone USVs will be positioned in the western tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of America tracking hurricanes as they develop.

ALASKA LANDSLIDE UNLEASHED ONE OF THE LARGEST TSUNAMIS EVER RECORDED, NEW STUDY SHOWS

While vessels will be fighting the harshest weather elements Earth has to offer in the form of hurricanes, NOAA scientists will use the data collected to study how exchanges of heat, moisture and momentum between the ocean and the atmosphere influence storm intensity.

The durable vessel includes a robust "hurricane" wing built to survive winds over 110 mph and massive waves exceeding 50 feet.

"This multi-year mission between NOAA and Saildrone is helping to improve our understanding of how hurricanes intensify, including when they strengthen rapidly before landfall," Greg Foltz, an oceanographer at NOAA and one of the principal investigators on the mission, said.

EYE OF THE SEASON: THE MOST NOTABLE ATLANTIC HURRICANES DURING EL NIÑO YEARS

"Each storm we observe gives us more data to evaluate and improve prediction models, which is critical for increasing forecast confidence, extending warning lead times and strengthening the nation’s preparedness for high-impact weather events," he continued.

While hurling towards hurricanes over the past five years, Saildrone has intercepted 21 named hurricanes and tropical storms on 46 occasions, spending more than 2,600 days on missions supporting hurricane research.

"The NOAA hurricane mission is one of Saildrone’s longest-running and most successful partnerships, and also one of the most technically demanding," Matt Womble, vice president of government relations at Saildrone, said.

"This mission reinforces the value of mature, long-duration uncrewed systems for operating in environments where persistent data collection is otherwise impossible by traditional means. During the 2026 hurricane season, Saildrone will transmit real-time data directly to global forecast centers, improving forecast accuracy and enabling federal, state and local officials to issue timely warnings—helping reduce storm impacts and, most importantly, protect lives.

Severe storm ingredients fuel possibility of tropical development late next week along Gulf of America

The FOX Forecast Center is eying possible development of tropical storms in the coming weeks for areas along the Gulf Coast and the Bay of Campeche.

By next week, forecasters are monitoring a large-scale weather pattern featuring an upper-level low, with a split in the mid-level ridge and troughing extending far into the southern U.S.

According to the National Weather Service, a trough is a lengthened area of relatively low atmospheric pressure and is usually not associated with a closed circulation.

SPRING SEVERE WEATHER SEASON SEES FEWEST NUMBER OF TORNADO DEATHS IN 5 YEARS

This trough introduces a weakness to the ridge that spans across the Gulf. At the same time, the ridging will extend into the Caribbean and establish a strong southerly flow from the Eastern Pacific and into the Gulf of America.

This could bring tropical moisture to northern portions of the country, potentially supporting severe storm development.

Forecasters are also seeing signals that a broad area of spin across the Central U.S. could return into next week, which could aid in tropical storm development.

SLITHERING TOWARD EXTINCTION: DEADLY DISEASES COULD WIPE OUT RATTLESNAKE POPULATION

"This is typically referred to as the Central American Gyre and is a sprawling area of low pressure that can produce locally heavy rain and aid in the formation of tropical cyclones," the FOX Forecast Center said.

This is most typical in late spring and early fall. Because of this, it does not guarantee tropical development.

"The greater interest stems from the upcoming hurricane tracking near the East Pacific coast and what may follow behind it, the FOX Forecast Center said.

ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2026 FORECAST

As the ridge builds, the atmospheric flow could help draw a substantial plume of tropical moisture northward.

As a result, above-average rainfall is becoming increasingly more likely across portions of the Gulf Coast.

Given this upper-level pattern, energy from the Eastern Pacific could cross into the Gulf, further enhancing moisture in the region.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – A magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported just outside Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday afternoon.

Around 1:48 p.m. on June 4, the earthquake occurred roughly 11 miles east of Sin City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS received more than 2,500 reports from individuals who said they felt shaking. According to the agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 7 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface.

Hoisted in honor of America's 250th birthday, the flag is almost as large as a football field, and lies across the face of the dam.

The Hoover Dam lowered the flag on Wednesday due to forecasted windy conditions.

Molly Costano, with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, joined FOX Weather shortly after the flag was raised, saying the flag would be preemptively lowered during periods of sustained wind gusts of 25 mph or higher for safety reasons.

With yet another day of potential flash flooding threatening South Florida, a south-moving cold front collides with a deep plume of tropical moisture.

Spring severe weather season sees fewest number of tornado deaths in 5 years

The spring severe weather season is over, and while impactful, the number of deaths caused by a tornado was lower this year than in the past half decade.

According to data from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), there were 12 tornado deaths in 2026 from January to May.

For example, by June 1, 2025, there were at least 61 deaths caused by tornadoes.

This year, the majority of fatalities happened on the first five days of March, with only one in April.

"When you look back through the data, there have been plenty of busier years," SPC Warning Coordination Meteorologist Evan Bentley said. "Generally, every three or four years or so we end up with a lot quieter May."

15 YEARS AGO: DEADLIEST MODERN US TORNADO DEVASTATES JOPLIN, MISSOURI

Bentley said, on average over the last 10 years, there were 37 fatalities from January to May.

According to SPC data, nine of the fatalities happened in a manufactured home, two were in a vehicle and one was in a house.

He said this isn't necessarily unusual, with most tornado fatalities occurring when people are out in the open or not in a secure structure.

May was unusually quiet with severe weather, with no fatalities reported.

"That is exceptionally rare," said Bentley. "The last time that happened was in 2021."

Bentley said this May, the weather pattern just wasn't favorable for tornado formation.

Nationwide in May, there were only 2 EF-3 tornadoes and 1 EF-2 tornado.

Statistically, tornadoes EF-3 or greater are the most likely to cause fatalities. Bentley said about 80% of tornado deaths happen during an EF-3 tornado or stronger.

He said this happens every few years, when certain years are quiet for tornadic activity.

Though May was quieter, especially for states like Oklahoma, which usually see significant severe weather from March to May, early spring was very active.

In March and April, Oklahoma, the heart of Tornado Alley, reported 34 tornadoes total.

"The fourth-most of anywhere in the United States," Bentley said. "That's actually a little bit earlier in the season than is typical for the state."

As we move into June, the weather pattern won't necessarily be quieter, it's still very active, but significant tornadic activity may not occur, he said.

Severe weather in June can stretch across a much larger area from Texas all the way north into the Upper Midwest and northern Plains and to the East Coast all on the same day.

"It's less intense, usually on the impact scale, most days, on the tornado threat, but the number of people that see severe storms actually is much greater in June and July," Bentley said.

He noted that June is typically the month for peak severe weather reports to the SPC.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is eyeing an area off the southwestern coast of Mexico for the development of the next tropical depression in the Eastern Pacific after Tropical Storm Amanda formed early Wednesday hundreds of miles from land.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Storm Amanda has sustained winds of 40 mph and is moving north-northwest at 9 mph. Amanda developed from Tropical Depression One-E, which was designated Tuesday.

A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph.

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. — At least two strong earthquakes struck off the Northern California and Oregon coasts early Wednesday, including a magnitude 5.7 quake. No Tsunami Warnings were issued.

MAGNITUDE 4.6 EARTHQUAKE STRIKES OFF THE COAST OF HAWAII'S BIG ISLAND

While very few people felt it on land, the magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off the southern Oregon coast Wednesday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the earthquake struck at 3:53 a.m. local time (10:53 UTC) about 99 miles west-northwest of Crescent City, California, roughly 6.2 miles below the surface.

So far, the USGS says only a handful of residents reported feeling the shaking in coastal communities along the Southern Oregon and Northern California border region.

That was followed by a magnitude 5.1 quake at 5:45 a.m. 55 miles southwest of Eureka, California, and a magnitude 4.1 quake in almost the exact same location about 30 minutes later.

Both quakes were less than a mile below the surface and shaking was reported to the USGS in several coastal communities.

BUXTON, NC. – Another unoccupied home collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean in Buxton, North Carolina, late Tuesday — the 20th such collapse in Buxton since September 2025.

This is the latest incident in an ongoing battle against coastal erosion in the Hatteras National Seashore on North Carolina's Outer Banks.

OUTER BANKS BEACHFRONT HOMES VULNERABLE TO COLLAPSE FROM RAPIDLY INTENSIFYING NOR’EASTER SLAMMING CAROLINAS

FOX Weather Correspondent Katie Byrne arrived on the scene early Wednesday; neighbors told her it took less than 30 minutes for waves to consume the collapsed home.

Byrne reported that additional pilings had recently been added to the now-destroyed house in an attempt to reinforce it until an expected beach replenishment project begins later this month.

A departing coastal storm remained well offshore Tuesday but still managed to generate rough surf, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Surf Advisory.

The National Park Service (NPS) warned people to stay away from remaining debris early Wednesday.

"Due to public safety concerns, all beach access from the north end of Buxton through the lifeguarded beach is temporarily closed until park rangers can assess the area," the agency said in a statement.

This is now the fifth home to collapse in Buxton this year and the 32nd home to fall into the ocean since 2020.

Many of these homes were once hundreds of feet from the beach, but are now constantly exposed to the ocean.

The 2025 hurricane season was particularly devastating for Buxton, even though no named storms made landfall in the U.S., as major hurricanes Erin, Humberto and Imelda caused significant beach damage.

According to Byrne, many of these properties are rentals, but some owners themselves are renting nearby accommodations while they work to shore up threatened homes or pay steep relocation costs.

KAHALUU-KEAUHOU, Hawaii — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake shook the Kona Coast on Hawaii's Big Island at 5:58 p.m. local time on Monday, according to the USGS. The epicenter was a little more than 3.5 miles offshore of the community of Kahaluu-Keauhou and 21 miles below sea level.

A Tsunami Warning was not issued.

MAGNITUDE 6.0 EARTHQUAKE RATTLES HAWAII'S BIG ISLAND

Shaking was felt across the Big Island and parts of Maui.

This follows a magnitude 6.0 quake that rattled the Big Island on May 22.

"Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours to days," the USGS said.

There's been no word on the extent of any damage.

CEMAES, Wales – As night fell over Cemaes Bay and severe thunderstorms swept across the northwest Wales coast on May 27, reports of a paddleboarder and her dog stranded in the worsening conditions prompted the deployment of a specialist rescue team.

The United Kingdom's Royal National Lifeboat Institution in Moelfre's all-weather lifeboat was requested to launch as the sun was setting to save the paddleboarder and her dog, as they waited for assistance at the base of a cliff on Cemaes Bay, according to an RNLI press release.

With torrential rain and a thunderstorm overhead, and the sun setting on the horizon, video footage captures the rescue team spring into action in weather conditions that one rescuer called "truly biblical."

HOW FLOODWATER CAN MAKE YOU VERY SICK

While the specialized weather rescue team deployed the all-weather lifeboat, a Cemaes Bay Coastguard Rescue Team was positioned above the cliff where they kept watch on the paddleboarder and her pooch, pointing out the pair as the last light of the day succumbed to the darkness of night.

As heavy rain fell and wind squalls exceeding 25 knots fueled the dangerous water conditions, the paddleboarder became trapped at the base of the cliffs after her paddleboard partially deflated.

A smaller, more versatile boat was launched from the all-weather lifeboat in the challenging mountains, and carefully maneuvered through rocky, shallow water to reach the woman and her dog, who were unharmed, but suffered from cold temperatures in the water.

The paddleboarder and her dog were quickly brought aboard the lifeboat, where they were assessed and given thermal protection before being safely transferred ashore to the waiting Coast Guard team.

BUXTON, N.C. - A homeowner in the Outer Banks chose a unique way to move their home away from dangerous waters.

In Buxton, North Carolina, a homeowner decided to undergo a massive project to save their oceanfront property by moving their entire house to a new location.

Jenni Koontz of Epic Photography told Storyful she captured footage of crews with Crum Works Inc. moving a home on Cape Court to a new lot close to Old Lighthouse Road.

It's a very short walk, but the move happened over the course of two weeks in May.

The move was done with the hope that the home could be saved from the same fate as neighboring properties that succumbed to the elements and fell into the ocean.

"The house was lifted, and the pilings cut using wood cribbing and a unified jacking system. Then lowered back down on hydraulic dollies," Koontz told Storyful.

"An excavator pilled the house with a chain to the new present pilings. The house was then lifted with the unified jacking system and rolled onto the pilings using yellow rollers," Koontz continued.

ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON: THESE ARE THE AREAS THAT FACE THE HIGHEST RISK

All the furniture stayed in place during the move, and the owner hopes to have the house ready to live in by the summer, according to Koontz.

"The homeowner paid out of pocket for the new lot, the cost of the move and rebuild costs, etc.," Koontz said. "There is usually little to no damage to the inside or the house from the move."

Although a rebuild permit cannot be issued for the original lot, the homeowner still owns it, according to Koontz.

"Hopefully with the upcoming beach nourishment project this summer in Buxton and the rebuild of the first jetty, this house will be safe from the ocean for many years to come," Koontz said.

Late Tuesday, another unoccupied home collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean in Buxton, North Carolina. This marks the 20th house to collapse in Buxton since September 2025.

The collapse comes after a High Surf Advisory was issued on Tuesday as waves appeared to be getting higher than initially expected in the Outer Banks.

Officials said 32 homes in Buxton and nearby Rodanthe have collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean since 2020, according to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

According to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, authorities have been working tirelessly throughout the day to clean up the debris from the most recent collapsed house.

As a result, the entire beachfront from the north end to the south end of Buxton Village is currently closed to public entry due to the debris from the collapsed house and the presence of threatened oceanfront structures.

Many of these homes were once hundreds of feet from the beach, but are now constantly exposed to ocean water, a drastic example of ongoing coastal erosion, which has been exacerbated by storms over the last several years.

According to the National Park Service, certain homes in the region are in an intertidal zone, which is an area that is exposed during low tide, but covered in water during high tide.

When there's an area of disturbed water in the Gulf of Mexico during hurricane season, it can cause panic. But it's important to note that there is no chance of this system becoming a tropical depression or storm, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

ANOTHER HOME COLLAPSES ALONG NORTH CAROLINA'S OUTER BANKS, 32ND SINCE 2020, AS HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS

Although the waters in the Gulf are plenty warm, strong east-northeast wind shear is ensuring that developing thunderstorms have no chance to organize.

But there will still be impacts. The disturbance is a weak area of low pressure packed with deep tropical moisture.

Increasing winds will direct the system northward toward the Gulf Coast, resulting in a mess of tropical downpours across Louisiana and southern Mississippi on Friday and Saturday.

There is enough moisture in the atmosphere for these storms to produce heavy rain, which could lead to street flooding along the Gulf Coast beginning Thursday.

Rainfall totals over 2 inches per hour are likely, and any single location could quickly pick up an inch of rain.

An offshore low-pressure system threatens the Carolinas with gusty winds and rough surf this week, further endangering a coastline already battered by the 2025 hurricane season.

The 2025 season brought turmoil to North Carolina's Outer Banks, despite no tropical systems making landfall.

ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2026 FORECAST

From September to late October, a total of 16 beach homes collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean in Buxton and Rodanthe, along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The FOX Forecast Center said this area of low pressure is expected to remain non-tropical and stay roughly 300 miles off the coast before pulling away into the middle and late part of the week.

Because of how far away it's going to be, very little rainfall is expected with this system.

ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON: THESE ARE THE AREAS THAT FACE THE HIGHEST RISK

However, gusty winds between 30 and 40 mph are likely along the coast.

Along with the winds, high surf and rip currents are a concern through the end of the week.

If these conditions continue for more than a day, the FOX Forecast Center said some minor beach erosion could happen, putting more vulnerable beach homes at risk.

In total, 31 oceanfront homes in the Outer Banks have collapsed since 2020. Others have been proactively removed due to the increased vulnerability of the coast.

Extreme weather events like nor'easters, hurricanes and other tropical systems, have accelerated beach erosion.

Homes that were primarily built in the 70s, 80s and 90s behind yards of beach and sand dunes, now lie in the ocean surf.

FOX Weather Correspondent Katie Byrne was posted in Buxton, in front of a home at risk of collapse on Oct. 2, 2025, preparing for a live interview with FOX Weather when the home collapsed.

Seven more homes went on to collapse in the remainder of 2025.

Since the start of the year, Buxton has seen four homes collapse into the ocean.

Millions across Central US in the path of another round of severe weather and potential flash flooding

Millions are in the path of severe thunderstorms beginning Thursday afternoon across parts of the Northern Plains and Central U.S. as the region faces a third consecutive day of severe weather. These storms will also tap into widespread Gulf moisture across the middle of the country, creating a flash flood threat that stretches from West Texas to southern Minnesota.

SLOW-MOVING SYSTEM TO BRING TROPICAL DOWNPOURS, ROUGH SURF AND STRONG WINDS TO THE GULF COAST

This is the latest in a week-long pattern where a dip in the jet stream, combined with 90-degree temperatures and Gulf moisture, will trigger storms capable of producing both severe weather and flooding rain.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Cars created wakes in a Katy, Texas, neighborhood as thunderstorms triggered flash flooding Wednesday.

This same pattern also brought a hailstorm to downtown Denver on Monday.

On Thursday, another storm system will move eastward out of southern Canada and into the Northwest, after supercell thunderstorms formed over Montana and the Dakotas earlier in the week.

WHAT IS A SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM?

A Level 2 out of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms covers parts of southeastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming, much of South Dakota, as well as northern Nebraska and eastern Minnesota beginning Thursday.

Large hail and damaging wind gusts are expected to be the primary hazards.

A broad Level 1 threat covers much of the Heartland, including Nebraska, as well as parts of Kansas and Oklahoma.

JUNE WEATHER OUTLOOK: LULL IN SEVERE WEATHER CONTINUES AS TORNADO ACTIVITY GOES QUIET DURING PEAK SEASON

A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood threat is centered on central Iowa, southeastern Nebraska and northeastern Kansas, as storms tap into widespread Gulf moisture.

Farther south, clusters of storms associated with a weak dip in the jet stream will drive a flash flood threat across western Texas and New Mexico.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, a Level 1 flash flood risk is in place for southeastern New Mexico and western Texas, including Ruidoso, New Mexico, where wildfire burn scars continue to increase flood vulnerability.

Despite the potential for flooding, heavy rain will help ease Extreme Drought conditions in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, as well as other parts of the Southern and Central Plains.

Gulf moisture will help produce heavy downpours, leading to flash flood threats where slow-moving thunderstorms develop.

Through the start of the weekend, 1 to 2 inches of rain are possible in areas such as Midland and Amarillo, Texas, as well as parts of the eastern Dakotas and western Minnesota.

Powerful magnitude 6.2 earthquake rattles parts of Southern Italy

SARACENA, Italy - Residents in southern Italy were rattled by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

POWERFUL MAGNITUDE 5.5 EARTHQUAKE RATTLES WESTERN NEVADA, NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, MULTIPLE AFTERSHOCKS REPORTED

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake struck about 10 miles southwest of Saracena, Italy, at 6:12 p.m. EST (12:12 a.m. UTC).

The earthquake had a depth of over 153 miles and hit approximately 23 miles from Cosenza in the Calabria region.

According to the USGS, the initial earthquake had an estimated intensity of IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. This level of shaking is considered light, but is strong enough to be felt by many people indoors and may awaken some individuals who are asleep.

WHAT TO PUT IN AN EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT

During the event, dishes, windows and doors may have been disturbed, and walls could have produced cracking sounds. Parked vehicles may also have rocked noticeably.

People outdoors may not have felt the earthquake.

Authorities in the region reported no immediate damage or injuries.

Officials and experts continue to monitor the area for any additional activity.

This isn't the first time Italy has faced an earthquake. According to understandingitaly.com, the country experiences frequent seismic events, ranging from small tremors to powerful earthquakes.

Just last month, Bacoli, Italy, was rattled by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake.

June is when tourism starts to pick up for the summer in Italy.

Tropical Storm Jangmi barrels toward Japan with heavy rain, damaging winds

Tropical Storm Jangmi is barreling towards Japan, bringing its first impacts to the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, before it's expected to weaken as it approaches the mainland.

EL NIÑO COULD MEAN MORE TROPICAL ACTIVITY FOR THE WESTERN PACIFIC

Heavy rain and strong winds have already taken hold as the center of the storm sits just to the west of Okinawa in the Ryukyu Islands, just south of mainland Japan.

Evacuations have been ordered throughout multiple Okinawa municipalities, with emergency shelters open. Travel has been disrupted with hundreds of flights canceled through Tuesday.

TROPICS: SEASON’S FIRST SIGNS OF DEVELOPMENT IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC WITH NEW AREA TO WATCH

The Naha Airport, which handles almost all major domestic and international flights, has closed for a full day on Monday for safety.

Jangmi developed into a typhoon on Saturday, before weakening to a tropical storm on Monday.

ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2026 FORECAST

The tropical storm is currently battering Japan's Ryukyu Islands with damaging winds and heavy rain.

This includes the island of Okinawa, where the U.S. maintains a large military presence across multiple bases.

Kadena Air Base has reported a wind gust of 74 mph, and Naha International Airport reported a gust of 77 mph.

By Wednesday in Japan, Jangmi will begin to affect the Japanese mainland.

The storm should be weakening at that point. However, a notable punch of rain and winds possibly topping 50 mph, will be likely for cities such as Osaka, Hamamatsu and Tokyo.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, from 1991 to 2020, the Western Pacific typically averages 26 named storms, 16 typhoons, and nine major typhoons per season.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Following an active start to the season — which has already produced four named storms, a typhoon, and a major typhoon — the FOX Forecast Center notes that this trend could continue as El Niño intensifies.

Earlier this year, the second-strongest typhoon ever observed this early in the year occurred: Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which rapidly intensified into a super typhoon with 175 mph winds on April 12.

This caused extensive damage across the Northern Mariana Islands as well as Guam.
