Man dies after being caught in a rip current on Long Beach Island in New Jersey

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J.– A 28-year-old man died on Friday after being caught in a rip current along with three other people in New Jersey.

Ship Bottom Police Department said they, along with fire, EMS and Surf City Fire, responded to a call for four people caught in a rip current

WHAT IS A RIP CURRENT AND HOW TO SURVIVE ONE

Upon arrival, police said three of the people were able to get out of the water, but one man was still missing.

Local surfers and fire rescue personnel were able to find the missing man, unconscious and not breathing.

They performed life-saving measures on scene and took him to a local hospital, where he later died.

He was identified as 28-year-old David Maldonado-Ocelotl from Forked River, New Jersey.

"The Ship Bottom Police Department extends its condolences to David’s family and loved ones," the police department said.

Northern Plains brace for explosive weekend storms with damaging winds, hail threat

Severe storms have reignited in the northern Plains, bringing a risk for large hail and damaging winds through this weekend after a week of severe thunderstorms blasted the Central US.

Storms are setting up in North Dakota and Montana primarily on Saturday, but the threat shifts south and east heading into Sunday.

The FOX Forecast Center said storms could pack hail larger than 2 inches in diameter and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph.

The SPC issued a Level 2 out of 5 severe thunderstorm risk on Saturday for western North Dakota and eastern Montana.

A level 1 threat extends into South Dakota and Wyoming as well.

SEVERE STORM INGREDIENTS FUEL POSSIBILITY OF TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT LATE NEXT WEEK ALONG GULF OF AMERICA

On Sunday, daytime hours will be nice and breezy, but the late afternoon and evening hours are when the storms roll in and become more intense.

As a powerful upper-level system lifts out of the Rockies and pushes a cold front eastward, severe storms will rapidly ignite across western and central North Dakota.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

The SPC issued a level 3 out of 5 for portions of Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota due to an increasing wind threat.

A level 2 severe storm threat is in place for eastern Wyoming, western South Dakota, most of central North Dakota and the southeastern corner of Montana on Sunday.

Individual supercell thunderstorms capable of producing large hail will transition into fast-moving storms, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Along with the large hail threat, damaging winds are also possible through the overnight hours.

7 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HAIL

Storms will fizzle out on Monday before firing back up again over the same areas on Tuesday and Wednesday when all threats of severe weather will be possible.

Kayaker found dead after being struck by lightning on river in Florida's Gulf Coast

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Flo. - A man kayaking on a river in Santa Rosa County, Florida, died after being struck by lightning and falling into the river.

On Sunday afternoon, 18-year-old Michael Vargas and his father were kayaking on the Blackwater River when Vargas was struck by lightning and fell off his kayak.

Vargas' dad and Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation employees witnessed the incident, and immediately began searching for him in the water.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was notified of Vargas' disappearance just before 12:30 p.m., and was dispatched to assist with the search along with Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and Daphne Search and Rescue.

FWC said Vargas was found dead in the water.

"The FWC extends its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Michael Aiden Vargas during this difficult time," Florida FWC said in a statement.

This is the second reported lightning death in the U.S. in 2026, according to the National Lightning Safety Council.

MADISON TOWNSHIP, Indiana - During flash flooding on Wednesday, a tiny baby deer was rescued from rapid floodwaters by a fire department in Indiana.

While dispatched to a call to rescue someone stuck in their car on a flooded roadway, Madison Township Fire Department heard a baby deer being carried through floodwaters next to the road.

WOMAN DEAD AFTER BEING SWEPT AWAY BY SWIFT WATER DURING FLASH FLOODING IN TENNESSEE

The occupant of the car was able to get themselves out without the help of the fire department, so they jumped in to save the baby animal.

Video shows Capt. Joe Sinclair in full water rescue gear and attached to a cable entering high muddy floodwaters to save the deer.

As he entered the water, the head of the fawn was seen being pulled through the current.

Sinclair quickly reached out to grab the animal, letting go of his grip on the ground.

"Got her?" one person asked Sinclair in the water.

"Yep, pull me in," Sinclair said to his teammate.

Together, the firefighters outside the water began yanking him back to land, with his head going underwater at one point because of the rushing water.

Eventually, Sinclair made it back to land.

Photos showed the wet fawn held by its rescuers after being pulled from the waters.

Madison Township Fire Department said the deer was cared for by medics on scene and transferred to a local wildlife rescue.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.– A powerful dust storm was caught on video Monday, from a passenger aboard a flight heading out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, as the system moved in.

In the video, waves of thick dust hang over the city beneath the plane.

The National Weather Service office in Albuquerque warned of blowing dust through southern and central parts of the city through Monday afternoon.

As the plane continued to fly away from the city, the dust got thicker as it blew toward Albuquerque.

According to the NWS, a dust storm is a wall of dust and debris that is blown into an area by strong winds from thunderstorms.

Rain, thunderstorms and the threat of flash flooding have been prevalent across New Mexico in recent days.

The NWS said dust from dust storms can be miles long and thousands of feet high, as made clear by the video.

In the video, the clouds of dust expanded for as far as the eye could see, met by gray cloudy skies.

As the camera panned toward the front of the plane, more and more dust could be seen.

Woman killed by flying umbrella while dining outdoors at South Carolina restaurant

CLARENDON, S.C. – Tragedy has unfolded in South Carolina after a windy day led to the death of a woman dining outdoors over the weekend.

A family was dining at the Driftwood Grill in Clarendon County, South Carolina, when the unthinkable happened: a woman was struck with deadly force by a flying umbrella.

"The decedent and her husband were dining at the local restaurant on the patio when a sudden strong wind blew an umbrella from a table, which struck the decedent in the head and neck area," read a press release from the Clarendon County Coroners Office.

TORRENTIAL RAIN TRIGGERS FLASH FLOODING IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA AREAS STILL RECOVERING FROM HURRICANE HELENE

According to the Clarendon County Coroner’s Office, dispatchers received a call regarding a laceration wound at around 9:40 p.m. in Summerton, South Carolina.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement and EMS found the woman unresponsive with a life-threatening wound to the head and neck area.

First responders performed life-saving measures but were unable to revive the woman, and she was pronounced dead just over an hour later.

3 children found dead in hot cars in 24-hour span as temperatures skyrocketed across the US

In just one day, three children were found dead in hot cars this week as temperatures rose across the U.S. this week.

According to Kids and Cars Safety, these deaths marked five total child hot car deaths in the country so far this year.

4-YEAR-OLD TRAGICALLY FOUND DEAD INSIDE HOT CAR IN THE GOLDEN STATE

On Tuesday in Los Angeles, a 4-year-old girl was found dead inside a hot car by police.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in downtown Los Angeles reached 87 degrees on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, two children died.

One hot car death occurred in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where temperatures reached 97 degrees. The child was 2 months old, according to Kids and Car Safety.

Police said the child was left in a hot car by its mother while she was at work. The child was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Another child died in Brookwood, Alabama, on Wednesday, where temperatures hit 90 degrees.

Kids and Car Safety reported that the child was 1 year old.

Young children and infants are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and death, as their bodies are less able to adapt to heat than adults.

According to Kids and Car Safety, approximately 86% of children who die in hot cars are age 3 or younger.

Shaking reported across Hawaii after magnitude 6.0 earthquake rocks Big Island

People in Hawaii reported shaking across most of the islands after a notable earthquake occurred on the Big Island on Friday night.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake was reported at about 9:46 p.m. Hawaii time.

The earthquake originated about 14 miles beneath the surface, about 13 miles south of Honaunau-Napoopoo, Hawaii and 23 miles north-northwest of Kailua-Kona.

The most significant shaking was reported across the Big Island, but the USGS has reports of weak and light shaking in Maui and the other islands.

Two aftershock earthquakes were reported a short time later.

LĀHAINĀ NOON: THE RARE SOLAR PHENOMENON THAT MAKES SHADOWS DISAPPEAR IN HAWAII

A magnitude 3.2 at 9:52 p.m. and then a magnitude 2.6 an hour later at 10:50 p.m. local.

Weak shaking was reported with both of the aftershocks.

There was no tsunami threat with these earthquakes, according to the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management.

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii — A unique phenomenon known as a "Tephra Devil" was captured swirling over a crater on Hawaii's Kilauea during the volcano's 47th eruptive episode last week.

HAWAII’S KĪLAUEA VOLCANO ERUPTS FOR THE 47TH EPISODE, SENDING FOUNTAINS OF LAVA INTO THE AIR

Tephra is a catch-all term that describes various kinds of rocks blasted into the air during eruptions.

The swirl seen in this video is similar to a dust devil — where the ground warms a thin layer of air directly above it that rises. Surrounding air rushes in to fill that void and sometimes converges with a crosswind, producing a visible column of twisting air once debris is lifted.

WHAT IS A DUST DEVIL?

According to the USGS, lava or fresh tephra can create enough localized heat to cause surface-level air to rise.

USGS scientists have observed low-density tephra produced in recent eruptions become short-lived "Tephra Devils," spinning like small fiery tornadoes over the volcano's craters.

HERE ARE THE DIFFERENT ASHFALL ALERTS THAT COULD BE ISSUED DURING VOLCANIC ACTIVITY

Tephra can be carried by the wind and cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory system and, along with volcanic gas, are the main hazard to local communities during these events.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted around 3:30 p.m. last Thursday, its 47th eruptive episode since Dec. 23, 2024.

BEYOND SUPER EL NIÑO: THE SECRET OCEAN PATTERN THAT COULD FUEL HURRICANES IMPACTING HAWAII THIS YEAR

Lava fountains reached a maximum height of 650 feet during this eruption.

According to scientists, the next eruption is expected between Friday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 26.

This period of frequent activity at Kiluea is being driven by magma chambers that are quickly refilling within the volcano. These short eruptions have not been strong enough to dramatically change the pressure in these chambers, which have reached something of an equilibrium.

"Since the ongoing eruption began in December of 2024, there has been little overall change in the amount of pressurization of the magma chambers beneath Kīlauea summit," the USGS said in a FAQ report on Kilauea.

Unless a stronger eruption occurs, it appears that this pattern will continue in the near-future.

BUXTON, N.C.– A home on the beach on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina was torn down on Monday to save it from an inevitable collapse.

It's a familiar scene, as 31 beach homes in Rodanthe and Buxton have collapsed into the ocean due to beach erosion and extreme weather events since 2020.

Video from Jenni Koontz of Epic Shutter Photography showed the octagonal home, with its stairway long gone and its pilings leaning, proving the home was in its last days.

Large sandbags lined the beach in front of the home to prevent debris from floating into the ocean as an excavator worked to rip it apart.

With one crunch of the excavator's arm into the home, its pilings gave way and the home collapsed onto the beach with loud cracks and a crash.

Inside the home, a mattress still sat in a bedroom, which the excavator later pulled out as it continued tearing into the house.

OCEAN BATTLE: CREWS RUSH TO SAVE NORTH CAROLINA OUTER BANKS HOME FROM COLLAPSING INTO THE ATLANTIC

A look down the shore showed only one or two houses left standing in the ocean, while dozens of others teeter along the edge of the sandy beach and the ocean surf.

Wind, waves and harsh weather conditions over the last decades have left these homes closer and closer to the ocean, when they used to be several feet back on the beach.

In September and October, a series of homes collapsed into the surf in Buxton. FOX Weather Correspondent Katie Byrne was posted in front of a home at risk of collapse on Oct. 2, preparing for a live hit with FOX Weather when the home collapsed.

The house floated in the ocean after collapsing, with waves eventually tearing the house apart.

So far in 2026, four houses have collapsed along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The series of collapses occurred on Feb. 1 and 2 following a powerful nor'easter that slammed the Carolinas with blizzard-like conditions and powerful waves.

Back in March, an entire house was transported on the back of a flatbed truck from Holden Beach to the town of Supply, NC.

The house was deemed salvageable despite the ongoing erosion and coastal flooding, and was relocated more inland.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Dare County, North Carolina have worked together to clear out debris from these homes post-collapse.

Dare County said these threatened homes have to be removed or relocated at the cost of the homeowner in many cases.

SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa — Dramatic footage seen live on FOX Weather @ Night showed wind gusts bringing traffic to a standstill on Interstate 29 near Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, during live storm tracking Sunday evening.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Headlights were barely visible amid the powerful wind gusts and driving rain.

"Wow, that's going to be 70-plus mile-an-hour wind," FOX Weather Meteorologist Ari Sarsalari said while watching the storm live through cameras from Iowa's Department of Transportation, just after 7:30 p.m. local time.

TORNADO SAFETY: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TAKING SHELTER DURING SEVERE WEATHER

"If there was ever a legitimate Severe Thunderstorm Warning that said 70 mph-plus, that is the one," said Sarsalari.

Sarsalari noted that a tornado was confirmed by radar in the nearby city of Salix, Iowa.

The city government announced on social media that the Fire Department was serving as a shelter for residents in need of a safe space during the storm.

On Monday, the city opened part of a local baseball field for tree debris. There was no word on the extent of any other damage or injuries.

SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK TARGETS MILLIONS ACROSS 1,000+ MILES WITH VIOLENT TORNADOES POSSIBLE IN CENTRAL PLAINS

Over the weekend, there were more than 70 Tornado Warnings and 400 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, mostly concentrated across the Central Plains and parts of the Midwest.

Large tornadoes were seen tearing across rural parts of Nebraska Sunday.

This region is once again in the bull's-eye of severe weather Monday, including the threat of long-track, violent tornadoes over parts of Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. Iowa is under a Level 3 out of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms.

Mandatory evacuations issued in Colorado as a large, rapidly-spreading wildfire burns more than 13,000 acres

Authorities have ordered mandatory evacuations for Baca County, Colorado, on Sunday, as a large, rapidly-spreading wildfire scorches more than 13,000 acres.

The Baca County Emergency Management office issued mandatory evacuations for the Town of Campo and areas along Road 24 from Highway 287 to the state line due to the wildfire's raging flames.

EVACUATIONS UNDERWAY AS LIGHTNING SPARKS MASSIVE GRASSFIRE AND BURNS THOUSANDS OF ACRES IN TEXAS

Officials warn that the fire could pose a threat to life and property.

"Active threat to life and property, do not wait," Baca County Emergency Management said in a social media post. "Evacuate to the north as fires are moving south to northwest."

According to the National Weather Service, a Red Flag Warning is in effect until 9 p.m. MST as gusty winds and low humidity continue to elevate fire danger across the region.

EMERGING THREAT: OFFICIALS NOTE RECORD NUMBER OF DRONES IN RESTRICTED AIRSPACE DURING FIRES

The Sharpe Fire began Friday in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, and has since spread toward Colorado’s southern border.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt posted on social media Sunday that the state has mobilized resources to respond to the fire, including Oklahoma Forestry Services, which is providing air support to assist crews on the ground.

"The Oklahoma Emergency Management is activated and is deploying resources to assist local partners responding to the fire," Stitt said. "We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed."

WILLISTON, N.D. — A major dust storm created blizzard-like conditions in western North Dakota Thursday afternoon, reducing visibility to near-zero and causing several crashes on local highways.

DANGERS OF DUST STORMS

Video from the North Dakota Highway Patrol showed a wall of dust that made it nearly impossible to see.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Troopers responded to a crash involving tanker trailers on Highway 85 in Williams County around 1:30 p.m. local time. Police said the driver was saved by their seatbelt.

A pickup towing a trailer rolled over on Highway 83 south of Minot during the dust storm. Similar conditions were seen on Highway 28, north of Berthold and on Highway 40, south of Tioga.

A High Wind Warning for gusts between 40 and 70 mph was in effect and a Blowing Dust Advisory was upgraded to a Blowing Dust Warning just after 2 p.m.

CANYON, Texas - Mandatory evacuations are underway in Canyon, Texas, as a rapidly spreading grass fire scorches parts of the region.

STRONG WINDS, DRY AIR EXPAND FIRE THREAT FROM THE PLAINS INTO THE ROCKIES AS SOUTHEAST RISK EASES

The Hunggate Fire began Thursday afternoon when a storm cell moved across Randall County, producing lightning that sparked a series of grass fires throughout the area.

As of Thursday evening, the fire had burned more than 14,000 acres and is 10% contained.

Crews from Texas A&M Forest Service and multiple local fire departments are actively working to contain the fire as numerous structures remain threatened in the impacted areas.

Dust storm causes several multi-car crashes, shuts down highway in eastern Washington

SPANGLE, Wash.– A state highway in the town of Spangle, Washington, was shut down on Wednesday morning due to multi-car crashes caused by a dust storm.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), U.S. 195 was closed in both directions between Cheney-Spokane Road and Watt Road in Spangle because of the crashes.

11 PEOPLE RESCUED AFTER PLANE CRASHES INTO THE OCEAN OFF THE COAST OF FLORIDA

The department said high winds were picking up dust, leading to several crashes.

A Dust Storm Warning was in effect for Spokane County, Washington, through 10:45 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

TOBELO, Indonesia — The Mount Dukono volcano in Indonesia erupted Friday morning local time, killing 3 hikers who had entered a restricted zone, according to local police.

The Police Chief of the North Halmahera Regency provided an update on KOMPAS TV, a state broadcast partner, that 20 climbers, including 9 tourists, were in a banned area during the eruption.

He said the victims were two Indonesian citizens and one tourist. Their identities have not been released.

NOAA’s State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC) confirmed a hailstone that fell in the Texas panhandle during a June 2024 severe weather event was the largest in the state’s history.

'MONSTER'-SIZED HAILSTONE COULD SHATTER TEXAS RECORD, NEAR WORLD RECORD

In a report, the committee determined that the hailstone, also known as the Virgo Park hailstone, measured 7.1 inches in diameter, breaking the previous Texas record of 6.5 inches.

The record-breaking hailstone came from a supercell thunderstorm that developed on June 2, 2024, in an environment conducive to producing large hail.

The stone was found lying in a roadside ditch by storm tracker Val Castor, who initially thought it was a discarded gallon of milk.

When Castor realized it was a hailstone, he suspected it could be record-breaking.

"As I was chasing this tornadic supercell, I started to notice large hail on the ground the size of softballs, with some still falling sporadically," Castor said. "As I drove past it, I thought there was no way this was a hailstone, but I turned around and went back. As I got closer, it became clear that it was indeed a very large hailstone."

Images he shared with the National Weather Service and the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) showed the hailstone was slightly longer than a can of Monster energy drink.

Castor estimated that the hailstone at about 7.25 inches in diameter. However, IBHS later said the stone measured about 7.06 inches using an AI-based technique, or 7.16 inches through detailed photogrammetric analysis.

Because there was no definitive measurement, the most conservative estimate of the hailstone’s diameter was determined to be 7.10 inches.

Based on photographic evidence comparing the hailstone next to objects for reference, along with reliable eyewitness accounts from the event, the SCEC voted unanimously to certify that the stone was 7.1 inches in diameter.

DERBY, Kan. — On the evening of Saturday, April 25, a massive animatronic Sauroposeidon dinosaur at Field Station: Dinosaurs — a park featuring over 40 prehistoric, realistic, life-sized dinosaurs — was struck by a powerful bolt of lightning amid severe storms, engulfing the structure in flames.

Along with the storms came flash flooding that triggered water rescues, while intense winds downed power lines across parts of the Midwest and South.

Communities across the region are still reeling from the widespread damage, even as the threat of additional severe weather continues to loom.

Around 8:30 Saturday night, Derby Fire crews were dispatched following multiple reports of a lightning strike and a dinosaur on fire at the theme park.

Firefighters arrived to find the three-story Sauroposeidon up in flames.

Fortunately, crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other dinosaurs and the 39 remaining are all intact.

Around 11:45 local time, rumors initially began circulating about a gas plant catching fire, but Springtown officials clarified the situation, stating: "There has not been any damage or fire reported at the gas plant on the north side of the city. There was a reported fire in the 800 block of North Avenue B at the beginning of the storm."

Alabama and southern US mark 15 years since the Super Tornado Outbreak of 2011

Communities across the southern U.S. — and in Alabama in particular — are marking 15 years since the April 27 Super Tornado Outbreak of 2011, a day etched in memories forever as the deadliest and one of the most destructive severe weather outbreaks in recorded American history.

Cities, towns and neighborhoods were transformed forever — 240 people were killed in Alabama alone on that Wednesday.

The multiday tornado outbreak initially began on April 25, and during the next three days, the spring storm system impacted 26 states, killing at least 321 people and injuring thousands more.

This somber milestone comes with severe weather yet again in the forecast this Monday, although it is not expected to even approach the tragic scale of 2011.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported at least 350 tornadoes formed during the 2011 outbreak, including four rare EF-5s with winds over 200 mph.

WHAT IS THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE FOR HOW TORNADOES ARE RATED?

Meteorologist JP Dice, who served as the chief meteorologist for FOX 6 in Birmingham during the historic event, recalled the first scenes of tornadoes forming that morning.

"Those pictures coming into live from our cameras — it almost looked like something coming out of Hollywood — it didn't look real," said Dice.

"I've never seen anything like that in my television career — tornadoes that were that large, doing that much damage."

The outbreak was not a surprise to meteorologists at NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC), who issued a high risk (5 out of 5) threat and placed the bull's-eye zone over northeast Mississippi, south Tennessee and northern Alabama.

A series of squall lines produced many of the tornadoes throughout the day, but where storm cells were able to tap into the unstable environment, they produced strong, long-track tornadoes.

One of the most destructive twisters was an EF-4 that hit populated areas in Alabama that included Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, killing 65 people and injuring 1,500 along its devastating path.

The tornado is believed to have stayed on the ground for 80 miles and with peak winds around 190 mph.

Immediately after the storms, Jeff Byard, an executive operations officer for Alabama Emergency Management, said he knew the scope of the damage was unfathomable.

"It soon became very apparent that the state could not handle the emergency alone. It will go down in history as the worst outbreak of tornadoes in Alabama," Byard said.

NASHVILLE’S SCARS STILL HEALING TWO YEARS AFTER DEADLY TORNADO OUTBREAK

The Federal Emergency Management Agency reported 247 residents in the state, and more than 23,000 homes were either damaged or destroyed.

NOAA estimated damages at roughly $12 billion, making it the costliest tornado outbreak in history.

The outbreak was one of several during April 2011 that pushed the tornado count to 751, the most ever reported during a single month.

TORNADO SAFETY: EVERYTHING TO KNOW ABOUT STORM SHELTERS

"We had always looked at the 1974 event as being the benchmark for tornado events," Dice said, referring to the April 3, 1974, outbreak that's remembered for the F-5 tornado that tore through Xenia, Ohio.

"Now, anytime there's severe weather, people immediately go back to April 27, 2011, as being that new benchmark."

While 2026 is not expected to approach the 2011 event, a volatile atmosphere is expected to develop over the Midwest and Mid-Mississippi Valley on Monday, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

MILLIONS BRACING FOR SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK WITH POTENTIAL LONG-TRACK TORNADOES IN MIDWEST

"All severe weather hazards are possible on Monday, including long-tracked, strong tornadoes," the FOX Forecast Center said.

The SPC has issued a Level 3 out of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms across the region, including the St. Louis and Paducah, Kentucky metro areas.

WISE COUNTY, Texas — Texas was battered by severe weather producing large hail, thunderstorms and powerful winds — some nearing 90 mph — overnight.

With multiple tornado reports concentrated in North Texas, the National Weather Service (NWS) said they are conducting damage surveys to confirm the reports and issue official ratings for these storms.

The trail of destruction displaced 20 families and caused numerous injuries, with Wise County Judge J.D. Clark confirming at least one fatality in the Runaway Bay area.

MILLIONS AT RISK ACROSS PLAINS AS LARGE HAIL, POSSIBLE INTENSE TORNADOES RETURN TO KANSAS, OKLAHOMA

A second fatality was confirmed in Parker County, Texas, on Sunday.

The Parker County Sheriff's Office said a 69-year-old woman was found dead in the debris of a severely storm-damaged mobile home.

Preliminary information from the NWS indicates that at least one tornado was an EF-2 with peak wind gusts of 135 mph. Other tracks and damage locations are still being assessed.

Following Sunday's press conference, officials issued a disaster declaration for the county "to ensure that our residents impacted by this event have every resource available to them to assist with the recovery process."

This comes as a part of a multi-day tornado outbreak that sparked on Thursday, April 23.

Storms also knocked out power to thousands of customers across North Texas.

Overnight, many utility partners, emergency response crews, county officials and specialized support teams worked to perform life-safety operations, restore power, support displaced residents and conduct damage assessments.

A reunification center was established in Runaway Bay during the initial response, but it has since been decommissioned as families were reunited.

ENID, Okla.– In the hours after a violent tornado ripped through northern Oklahoma, photos and videos are showing the damage to homes, cars and more across the area.

A large and powerful tornado blasted through Enid, Oklahoma on Thursday night, causing extensive damage to the city.

At 8:22 p.m. CDT, the National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma, issued a Tornado Emergency for Southeast Enid as a "confirmed large and destructive tornado" was located near Vance Air Force Base.

Video showed the massive tornado tearing through the area, picking up debris as it went.

As the sun rose on Friday morning, some of the first images of the destruction were revealed, as FOX Weather Meteorologist Haley Meier and the FOX Weather Beast Team inspected the damage.

Meier and the team traveled to other sites in Enid, where homes were damaged or destroyed.

Enid Mayor David Mason said there were several injuries reported from the storms, but no fatalities.

"We can rebuild those homes, and we will, but thank God there wasn't any loss of life," Mason said in an interview with FOX Weather.

Mason said neighboring counties across Oklahoma have offered an outpouring of support to the community following the destruction. He said the state of Oklahoma has also provided resources for the city.

NWS Norman said it would be surveying the damage to Enid on Friday, and hoped to share more details on the tornadoes soon.

The severe storm threat shifts toward the Mississippi Valley on Friday as a surface cold front pushes east. With ample instability and wind shear, severe storms will remain possible through Friday afternoon.

Initial storm development across eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas will pose a large hail and damaging wind threat, as low-level shear remains generally weak.

ENID, Okla. – A powerful EF-4 tornado tore through the city of Enid in north-central Oklahoma on Thursday night, devastating the Gray Ridge neighborhood and triggering a massive search and rescue response.

WHAT IS A 'TORNADO EMERGENCY'?

Both city and Garfield County officials confirmed Friday that the powerful twister caused only non-life-threatening injuries.

On Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service announced the tornado was rated an EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, this is the first EF-4 tornado of 2026, and the first EF-4 in Garfield County, Oklahoma, since April 26, 1991.

This is the first EF-4 tornado in Oklahoma since 2024, when two EF-4 tornadoes were reported in Marietta-Lake Murray on April 27, 2024, and Barnsdall and Bartlesville, Oklahoma on May 6, 2024.

Nearby Vance Air Force Base reopened Friday morning, and confirmed that no one was hurt on the base. Air Force base officials said Friday morning they were still conducting damage assessments.

RECORD HEAT FUELS SEVERE WEATHER IN NORTHEAST WITH DAMAGING WINDS, HAIL TARGETING MILLIONS ON THURSDAY

At 8:22 p.m. CDT, the National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma, issued a Tornado Emergency for Southeast Enid as a "confirmed large and destructive tornado" was located near Vance Air Force Base.

Local officials confirmed damage on Enid’s southern side, especially noting the Gray Ridge area. After the tornado swept through, officials reported residents trapped in homes and storm shelters.

Enid Mayor David Mason told FOX Weather on Friday that at least 40 homes were damaged in the Grey Ridge area.

Mayor Mason said homeowners in the Gray Ridge area have been allowed to return to their houses to salvage and assess damage.

"I am very grateful to report that while homes have sustained significant damage, there have been no fatalities and only minor injuries sustained," Mason said.

In the immediate aftermath of the storm, FOX Weather Meteorologist Haley Meier and the FOX Weather Beast Crew were positioned just outside Enid, where a steady stream of emergency crews moved into the city to support the immediate recovery effort.

"I saw a violent video of that active, violent stove-pipe tornado, and it was fairly stationary for a good bit. That tornado held on for as long as it could," Meier said.

Amid this prolonged stretch of severe weather expected to impact the Plains through the weekend, Gov. Stitt shared a message of solidarity.

Nearly 90 homes engulfed as Georgia wildfires continue to rage, forcing evacuations

Wildfires have scorched more than 35,000 acres and destroyed nearly 90 homes across southern Georgia amid historic drought conditions.

Smoke from the Pineland Road and Brantley County fires in southeast Georgia have also caused Air Quality Alerts as dry winds continue to challenge firefighters, with little rain relief on the horizon.

MOST OF COLORADO IS AT RISK OF DANGEROUS WILDFIRES AS WARM, DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency across 91 counties due to ongoing wildfires in the southern portion of the state, with a burn ban in effect for 30 days, unless otherwise renewed.

As of Thursday, the Brantley County Fire had burned more than 5,000 acres in southeastern Georgia and was 15% contained, destroying over 90 homes.

The sheriff's office said 1,000 more homes are currently threatened by the wildfire.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 'CONTROLLED' FIRE AND A 'CONTAINED' FIRE?

Officials believed the raging fire was under control Thursday morning until a massive plume erupted, as seen in footage captured by FOX Weather Field Correspondent Robert Ray.

"This fire has been escalated, just in the past three hours," Ray said around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Evacuations are underway in Brantley County along Browntown Road from Highway 82 to Greenleaf on the west side of the highway.

"Additional resources continue to arrive hourly, and more personnel are currently on scene than at any point since the incident began," the Brantley County Sheriff's Office said on Thursday morning.
