Rare magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattles rural Louisiana, marking strongest in state’s history

SHREVEPORT, La. – Residents across parts of Louisiana were rattled by a 4.9 earthquake on March 5, marking it the strongest earthquake ever in the state’s history.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the earthquake struck at 5:30 a.m. CT about 36 miles southeast of Shreveport, Louisiana at a depth of 3.1 miles.

With more than 1,100 reports of shaking so far, the USGS says residents as far north as Shreveport, along with some in southern Arkansas and western Texas, have felt the tremors.

It’s unknown at this time if any damage, injuries or deaths have been reported.

The Red River Parish Sheriff's Office highlighted the strength in a Facebook video reiterating the record as the "largest recorded earthquake on Louisiana soil."

Officials said, in recent years, the area has experienced several small earthquakes. While most have been minor, events like this serve as a reminder that earthquakes can occur unexpectedly at any time.

The Sheriff’s Office has been in contact with OEP Director Shane Hubbard and is coordinating with the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in response to the event.

Two people rescued after falling through ice on frozen Wisconsin lake, treated for severe hypothermia

MUKWONAGO, Wis.— Two people are expected to make a full recovery after falling through the ice at Rainbow Springs Lake on March 2, thanks to a rapid response from the Mukwonago Fire Department and accompanying teams.

At 3:17 p.m. local time, crews were called to Rainbow Springs for an ice rescue after reports that two people were heard yelling for help.

Officials arrived on scene at 3:25 p.m., and Battalion 34, along with law enforcement, located a woman who directed them to the two individuals yelling for help on the lake shortly after.

With the length of time the individuals had spent in the icy water unknown, officials established command and requested additional resources.

LONGTIME NEW JERSEY FIREFIGHTER TRAGICALLY DIES AFTER FALLING INTO FROZEN RIVER DURING ICE RESCUE

Located about 400 feet from the shoreline, a better access was found near the parking lot of the lake and deployment was immediate.

The individuals were able to keep themselves above the water on an ice shelf while calling for help.

Crews donned their ice rescue suits and reached the victims, successfully removing one individual at 3:39 p.m. and the second minutes later.

Due to the frigid temperature of the water, both victims were unable to speak or aid in the rescue, said the Mukwonago Fire Department.

The two were then transported to the Waukesha Memorial Hospital and treated for severe hypothermia.

Thanks to the fast response and support from nearby fire departments, the rescue was successful, and both individuals are expected to make a full recovery.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif.– Two men skiing in Lake Tahoe, California, happened upon a recent avalanche and discovered another skier buried in snow.

Carson Schmidt and his friend were skiing at Palisades Tahoe on Feb. 18, when they came upon deep snow from a recent avalanche.

Schmidt, who happened to be videotaping his ski adventures, noticed a person's ski poles and skis face up and a pile of snow.

"Hey, they good?" Schmidt asked his friend.

His friend looked over at the person and they both rushed to the buried skier.

They made quick work, digging through feet of fluffy snow to find the man's face.

"We got you," Schmidt or his friend said, as they found the man's face in the snow. "You're good. You're ok!"

Schmidt sighed in relief after they rescued the man.

An avalanche warning was in effect for the Central Sierra Nevada that day following feet of snow in California and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Magnitude 3.0 earthquake jolts South Carolina with shaking felt in capital city

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Residents across parts of South Carolina were rattled by a 3.0 earthquake on Thursday Feb. 26.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the earthquake struck at 12:17 p.m. local time (17:17:26 UTC) about 12.5 miles east, southeast of Columbia, South Carolina at a depth of about .12 miles.

So far, the USGS says residents in Columbia, SC, felt very light shaking, with no damage reported.

Lexington also felt some tremors.

It’s unknown at this time if any other damage, injuries or deaths have been disclosed.

Recently, multiple earthquakes have jolted parts of the state, including a magnitude 2.9 earthquake, with shaking felt wide near Chaleston on Feb. 7.

The Northeast was pummeled by a historic blizzard Sunday and Monday, leaving cities buried in snow and thousands without power.

Drone videos from Tuesday show some of the snowy scenes in residential River Vale, New Jersey and a snow-covered park in Orangetown, New York.

Snowmobiler killed as avalanche buries three in Idaho backcountry

ISLAND PARK, Idaho – A snowmobiler was killed on Sunday afternoon after being buried by a large avalanche.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), a group of four snowmobilers were visiting the area from the Midwest, when one was caught up in the avalanche.

The slide buried the person fairly deep and did not survive.

Two others may have been caught in the slide, as well, but were uninjured.

According to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center (GNFAC), dangerous avalanche conditions exist in the mountains near Island Park and West Yellowstone.

"Slopes steeper than 30 degrees should be avoided, including flatter terrain below steep slopes," says GNFAC.

The organization notes that avalanche danger is considerable south of Bozeman, near Big Sky, West Yellowstone, Island Park and Cooke City.

A historic blizzard is raging through the Northeast, burying the Interstate 95 corridor from Delaware to Massachusetts under feet of snow, with hurricane-force wind gusts driving snow into towering drifts.

Overnight Sunday into early Monday, the nor’easter underwent rapid intensification and officially met the criteria for bombogenesis, becoming a bomb cyclone.

More than 20 inches of snow has been reported so far, with another 12 inches or more still expected.

Islip, New York, is seeing snowfall totals well above 2 feet, hitting an incredible 28 inches in some areas.

And Stonybrook, New York, reached 74 mph winds, adding to the blizzard conditions.

FOX Weather Storm Specialist Mike Seidel has been braving near-whiteout conditions in Montauk, New York, on Long Island, battling towering snow and intense wind gusts during his live reporting.

Whipping winds have been relentless, even in Boston, one of the cities in the blizzard’s bull’s-eye, where near-whiteout conditions are occurring.

Parts of Massachusetts have even reached winds exceeding 75 mph.

As of 1 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service said the city had received over 14 inches of snow.

The number is likely to increase with the ongoing storm.

The massively impactful conditions have also made roads nearly impossible to travel.

And it looks like snowdrifts have trapped this door in place.

The blizzard has toppled tree branches and buried cars, yards and roads under deep, relentless snow.

The fresh powder is so high in North Patchogue, New York, this little pup is having a hard time seeing over the mound.

As of Monday afternoon, parts of Rhode Island have already seen more than two feet of snow.

FOX News Multimedia Reporter Asher Redd has been reporting live from Providence, where a heavy snow band continues to dump snow at rapid rates.

The city is seeing their biggest snowfall of all time with a reported 32 inches of snow, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

Redd and his crew faced whiteout conditions, constantly needing to wipe the camera lens.

The snow will come to an end during the day on Monday from New York and points west.

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. – San Bernardino County Fire Department used a specialized winter rescue vehicle known as a snowcat to save a camper and his dog who were stranded in the San Bernardino Mountains, which have received more than 4 feet of snow since Sunday.

The man is an experienced outdoorsman who had several days' worth of supplies, the department said, highlighting the intensity of the week's winter storms which have buried the Transverse Ranges and the Sierra.

The camper was in the Holcomb Valley backcountry several miles from the Pacific Crest Trail, which is more than 7,000 feet above sea level, when the snow became too intense and made driving impossible, rescuers said.

People are being reminded to check road conditions and the forecast before heading out on any excursions, the fire department advised Friday.

This rescue came amid a week of winter storm tragedies in Northern California, including a skier who was found dead in Placer County Wednesday and at least 8 skiers who were killed Tuesday on Castle Peak in the worst U.S. avalanche disaster in more than 40 years.

Harrowing rescuers save people trapped in remote national forest amid dangerous winter weather

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – A dire emergency in the dead of night triggered a colossal search and rescue effort for three stranded motorists while an intense winter storm shelled California's El Dorado National Forest.

A coalition of first responders were presented a near-impossible task in the treacherous winter weather elements of the Central Sierra Nevada mountains, battling through heavy snow, freezing temperatures and whipping winds in a battle against time to rescue three individuals that spent hours trapped in the desolate wilderness.

Initial information provided to first responders on Feb. 17 detailed two separate parties trapped in roughly six feet of snow on the rugged Mormon Emigrant Trail, an approximately 24.5-mile trail and designated spot for snowmobiling and off-highway vehicles, stretching from Sly Park to Highway 88, that climbs to an elevation over 6,000 feet.

According to officials, the first individual was trapped approximately six miles north of Highway 88. A second party of two, that launched from the Sly Park side of the trail to rescue the entrapped individual, also became stranded about eight and a half miles north of Highway 88.

Miles along a remote trail and lodged into feet of snow in the high altitudes, both parties spent the freezing night stranded in the wilderness of the El Dorado National Forest. The race against time became all the more crucial when both parties' cell phones died.

Using GPS coordinates, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office identified the location of the stranded motorists and requested outside assistance for the emergency rescue.

With feet of snow proving to be a formidable obstacle to the search and rescue operation, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office requested the deployment of the Amador County Sheriff’s Office Snowcat team to respond to rescue the stranded subjects.

A group of unlikely heroes from a utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), also responded to the request for assistance and deployed a Snowcat team to assist in the dire rescue.

A California Department of Transportation snowplow provided an escort for the team fighting against time to rescue the stranded motorists. Through whiteout conditions and in complete darkness, the team of first responders set out on a race against time in the harshest of elements, and after two and a half hours, they reached the intersection of Mormon Emigrant Trail and Highway 88.

At 2:30 p.m., two Snowcats crewed by first responders and volunteers from the PG&E and the El Dorado and Amador County sheriff's offices ventured into the treacherous wilderness.

WHAT IS HYPOTHERMIA?

Along the brutal trek to the stranded motorists, the Snowcats became stuck several times and required the committed heroes of the search and rescue team to dig the gigantic machines out by hand in near-blizzard conditions in sub-20 degree temperatures. According to officials, the road was never visible, and at points, the snow drifts exceeded the height of the Snowcats themselves.

According to officials, on a grueling trek through mountains of snow, it took the team six hours to travel six miles in the vicious conditions, finally reaching the lone stranded motorist.

At 8:30 p.m., the team was able to extract the motorist who showed small signs of hypothermia from his vehicle that was buried in snow, and place him into one of the Snowcats.

The rescue team pressed on to the two remaining motorists, and after trudging on for another two and a half miles, they reached the pair an hour later.

After 15 minutes of frantic digging, the rescue team secured the male and female, with both victims showing signs of hypothermia.

The race back to safety started, and using the trail they created on the way to the stranded motorists, the Snowcat team was able to extract all three individuals back to Highway 88 in a fraction of the time.

According to officials, two subjects were transported by CAL FIRE and one subject by Amador Fire Protection District (AFPD) personnel, 17 miles to Cooks Station where American Legion Ambulance (ALA) personnel were waiting. All three subjects were then transported to Sutter Amador Hospital by ALA where they were treated and subsequently released.

The persistent courage and bravery of the coalition of first responders in the hours-long, grueling battle against the elements saved the lives of the three stranded motorists. The harrowing rescue had a happy ending, but not all emergency rescue stories do.

Earlier this week, the second-deadliest avalanche in U.S. history killed eight skiers near Castle Peak, in the same mountain range and weather conditions the heroic first responders battled through to save the stranded motorists.

Drivers warned about jackknifed semi trucks, dangerous travel in Minnesota amid snowy conditions

MINNESOTA - The Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) is warning drivers to use caution and go slow on highways in the west-central part of the state as numerous crashes and jackknifed semis have been reported on Thursday.

A powerful winter storm brought blizzard conditions to Minnesota and the Upper Midwest on Wednesday, delivering more than a foot of snow across parts of North Dakota and Minnesota.

While the storm is moving out of the region and toward the Great Lakes, travel conditions are still very dangerous.

As of 10:30 a.m. CT, MSP said they've responded to 191 winter-related road incidents since midnight — five of which were jackknifed semi trucks.

Video from MSP Sergeant Jesse Grabow on Thursday morning showed the slippery roads and a jackknifed truck in the middle of the messy roads.

"Please drive with care and move over to give those on the side of the roads some room," Grabow said in a post to X.

In one clip, Grabow lit a road flare to alert oncoming drivers of the jackknifed semi and police response.

The MSP said it responded to 468 property damage crashes on Wednesday, along with 29 jackknifed semis.

As the snow from this storm tapers off, another storm is hot on its heels.

Minnesota and the Upper Midwest can expect to see light snow accumulations through Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah - Avalanche danger remains high after a series of massive snowstorms continues to pound the western U.S., specifically in Utah.

This had prompted both the Alta Ski Area and Snowbird Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, to enforce interlodge overnight, which has since been lifted Thursday morning.

Both areas have received colossal amounts of snow over the past few days, measuring in feet.

ANOTHER FOOT OF SNOW LIKELY IN SIERRA NEVADA AS 1 SKIER REMAINS MISSING FROM DEADLIEST US AVALANCHE IN DECADES

When a ski resort enforces interlodge, it means that guests are required to remain indoors due to extreme weather conditions or avalanche danger while avalanche work is being done.

Highway 210 holds a Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Highway Avalanche Hazard Index of 766, which is the highest in North America, according to Snowbird.

This score indicates that the highway is very dangerous during winter storms.

Ski resorts in Utah aren’t the only areas that can experience interlodge.

California ski resorts, particularly those in the Sierra Nevada with high-elevation, avalanche-prone terrain like Palisades Tahoe and Kirkwood, do as well.

And while it can be enforced in resorts across the Northeast, it’s less common.

HOW TO STAY SAFE FROM AVALANCHES AS RISK REMAINS HIGH IN WESTERN US

Due to heavy snowfall rates on Wednesday, Alta Ski Area closed at 2:30 p.m. and Alta Alerts took to X stating, "Thank you for your patience while our teams work through this storm event that has delivered 41 inches and counting."

Snowbird Resort also closed some of its lifts at 2:30 p.m. local time, as well.

Overnight, UDOT closed State Route 210 and Alta Ski Area enforced interlodge travel restrictions, lifting them a little before 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

"Most Interlodge events last only a few hours and are pre-planned," Snowbird said. "Under Alta town ordinances, violating Interlodge is a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and six months in jail."

In California, eight skiers have been found dead, with one still missing after a Sierra Nevada avalanche, marking it the deadliest avalanche in the U.S. since 1981, when the National Avalanche Center first started collecting avalanche data.

Magnitude 5.1 earthquake causes reports of shaking in Puerto Rico

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake on Thursday morning in the Atlantic Ocean caused shaking in Puerto Rico.

The earthquake happened roughly 98 miles north of Puerto Rico at 10:18 a.m. local time.

According to information from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was 19.5 miles deep.

Weak to light shaking was reported in Puerto Rico after the earthquake.

A rotating wall cloud with a possible funnel was spotted just northeast of Carlisle, Indiana.

Thunderstorms were able to organize into a line during both the afternoon and evening, in what was the highest severe storm threat in 2026 thus far.

AMARILLO, Texas – Dry conditions and gusty winds continue to fuel massive wildfires across the Plains after a powerful windstorm sparked an outbreak on Tuesday.

The fast-moving fires have forced evacuations in the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles, and Kansas.

In Beaver County, Oklahoma, the Ranger Road Megafire has already scorched more than 283,000 acres, and with ongoing dangerous fire weather conditions, it could continue to grow rapidly beyond the acres it has already consumed.

This fire has caused at least four firefighters to be hospitalized, according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.

Fire Weather Warnings are in effect for nearly 12 million people across much of New Mexico, far Southwest Texas and from southeast Colorado/southwest Kansas, across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, much of Oklahoma into northwest Arkansas, and large portions of Missouri, as the conditions are expected to persist supporting the dangerous fire threat across large portions of the Southern Plains through Friday.

Dangerous fire weather conditions persisted Wednesday as a strengthening low-pressure system over Colorado generated strong, gusty winds across the Plains, prompting Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt to declare a State of Emergency across Beaver, Texas, and Woodward counties, which are being threatened by the Ranger Road fire.

In part, Governor Stitt stated, "The Woodward fires are about 20% contained, and we were very fortunate to keep most neighborhoods safe. A few homes were lost, and we’re keeping four injured firefighters in our prayers as they recover after working tirelessly through the night."

Texas and Kansas activated wildfire response resources ahead of the outbreak.

The Texas County Sheriff’s Department took to Facebook on Wednesday stating that they responded to a small grassfire just east of Hooker, with Westbound 54 traffic affected and has since been put out.

On Tuesday, powerful wind gusts caused a multi-car pileup on Interstate 25 in Pueblo, Colorado, that killed five people.

Three other wildfires started Tuesday in the Oklahoma Panhandle — the Stevens Fire has grown to about 12,400 acres, the Side Road Fire to nearly 3,700 acres, and the 43 Fire to about 1,680 acres.

In the Texas Panhandle, the Lavender Fire has burned about 12,000 acres and is roughly 20 % contained, while the 8 Ball Fire has burned about 9,000 acres and is roughly 40 % contained.

NEVADA COUNTY, Calif.– Eight of the nine skiers who were reported missing after an avalanche in the Sierra Nevada on Tuesday have been found dead. Officials said one person is still missing and presumed dead.

The West Coast has seen intense snowfall from multiple storms slamming the region from Sunday night into Monday. Snow by Tuesday had reached 3 to 4 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

8 SKIERS FOUND DEAD, 1 STILL MISSING AFTER SIERRA NEVADA AVALANCHE AMID EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS

An avalanche warning was issued Tuesday and remains in effect through Thursday, meaning high avalanche danger persists.

Conditions remain highly dangerous as the sheriff's office and other agencies work to recover the eight people confirmed dead and continue to look for the last missing person.

Here is a timeline of events that took place prior to the avalanche occurring and how they stand currently:

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office said in a press conference on Wednesday morning that eight of the 9 missing skiers had been found dead. One skier was still missing.

All eight people located dead were wearing avalanche beacons, the sheriff's office said. Those found dead remain in the avalanche area at this time due to the extreme weather conditions.

One of the skiers who was rescued and hospitalized on Tuesday night was released. The other is still in the hospital but should be released soon, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said four men and two women were rescued alive.

Rescuers were notified of the six survivors via iPhone SOS signals. They also had avalanche beacons, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said the mission has transitioned to recovery.

Blackbird Mountain Guides has been very cooperative throughout the entire rescue process, the sheriff's office said. Officials said the tour group wanted to do everything they could to help with the rescue.

Blackbird Mountain Guides issued a second statement on Wednesday morning saying their entire team's primary focus is being dedicated to the search and rescue efforts in the Castle Peak area.

The group said they were in constant communication with rescuers.

Late Tuesday night, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office announced the six skiers who survived the avalanche were rescued.

The sheriff's office said two of the six skiers were taken to the hospital for treatment. The other four skiers had varying injuries, the sheriff's office said.

Extreme weather conditions meant it took several hours for rescuers to reach the six surviving skiers.

Hours into the rescue process, the ski tour guide group responsible for the trip the skiers were on, makes a statement regarding the rescue.

"The leadership team at Blackbird Mountain Guides is working in full coordination with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada County Search and Rescue to support the ongoing rescue operation," they said in part. "Blackbird Mountain Guides is in direct contact with the emergency contacts of the affected clients and guides and is providing them with regular updates as verified information becomes available."

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office said they reached the group of survivors at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Snowcat they had brought into the rescue was forced to stop roughly two miles from the survivors, and rescuers skied in to get to the six survivors.

Two of the six skiers were unable to walk due to injuries, the sheriff's office said during a Wednesday press conference.

The sheriff's office said the six survivors had begun searching for the missing while they awaited rescue, and located three of the missing.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office gave an update on the search and rescue mission.

They said six skiers survived the avalanche and remained at the avalanche site awaiting rescue.

It was originally reported that 16 people had been on the trip. It was later corrected to say only 15 were out, which left nine people missing.

The sheriff's office said a Snowcat team and highly skilled rescue ski teams were sent to make their way to the six known survivors, who were directed to shelter in place as best as they could given the ongoing weather conditions.

The sheriff's office said 46 emergency first responders were assisting with the rescue mission.

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office took to social media to let the public know an avalanche occurred in the Castle Peak area and a group of backcountry skiers had been caught in the avalanche with several skiers reported missing.

The total number of missing people at the time was undetermined.

A search ensued with the Nevada County Sheriff's Office and their search and rescue team and allied agencies looking for the missing skiers.

HOW CANNONS ARE USED TO FIGHT AVALANCHES

As heavy snowfall and intense winds continued throughout the Sierra Nevada, the Blackbird Mountain Guides group made the decision to head back to the trailhead from the Frog Lake Huts.

At around 11:30 a.m., an avalanche happened in the area as the group was making their way back to the trail.

8 skiers found dead, 1 still missing after Sierra Nevada avalanche amid extreme weather conditions

NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. – First responders said eight of the nine skiers missing after being caught in an avalanche on Tuesday morning in the Sierra Nevada have died.

The avalanche happened on Castle Peak in the California area Tuesday morning. Six skiers were rescued, eight were found dead and one is still missing, according to authorities.

Officials say this marks the deadliest avalanche in the U.S. since 1981, when the National Avalanche Center first started collecting avalanche data.

DANGERS OF AVALANCHES, AND WHAT TO DO IF AN AVALANCHE IS COMING AT YOU

Six people from the party were rescued Tuesday night and two were taken to a hospital, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office said. Of the six people rescued, five were clients, and one was a guide.

The sheriff's office noted that it was initially believed that 16 people went on the trip, but that was later revised to 15.

One person backed out of the trip at the last minute, the sheriff's office said.

Officials said the avalanche happened around 11:30 a.m. local time. Interstate 80 remained closed at the summit of Castle Peak due to a winter storm dumping feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Heavy snow and high winds created periods of whiteout travel and hampered the search Tuesday, with winter storm conditions expected to continue through much of the week.

"Widespread areas of unstable snow and numerous avalanches are expected today," the Sierra Avalanche Center said. "Avalanches could be triggered from very low on the slope in some areas. Avalanches from above could travel down through treed terrain, often thought of as ‘safe’ during storms."

Travel in the avalanche area is not advised during such extreme conditions. The Sierra Avalanche Center said if travel can't be avoided, use extreme caution and prepare for low visibility around the mountains.

2 DEAD AFTER AVALANCHE NEAR SITE OF WINTER OLYMPICS IN ITALIAN ALPS

An avalanche warning remains in effect through 5:00 a.m. local time Wednesday, and the Sierra Avalanche Center said large avalanches are expected to occur across backcountry terrain.

The sheriff's office said the search is ongoing as weather conditions permit.

An avalanche in the region in early January left a snowmobile trapped in nearby Truckee. A search and rescue mission uncovered the snowmobile buried in snow, but he didn't survive.

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Two injured hikers were airlifted to safety Sunday night after they fell into an avalanche chute while climbing Mount Ellinor in Washington's Olympic National Forest.

A 51-year-old and a 16-year-old had fallen partway down the side of the mountain onto a path where avalanches travel, the Coast Guard's Northwest District said in a news release.

The 51-year-old had abdominal injuries and the 16-year-old hurt their knee.

Infrared footage shows first responders securing the injured hikers onto a rescue litter in the darkness before hoisting them into a helicopter amid near-freezing conditions Sunday night.

Teams from the Mason County Sheriff's Office and Olympic Mountain Rescue helped to locate the hikers before they were airlifted by the Coast Guard to Olympia Regional Airport.

A potentially dangerous fire threat is unfolding across the Plains as warm temperatures and strong wind gusts combine with a very dry landscape through Wednesday.

These conditions are developing in a region that is already experiencing a drought with the lack of recent rain and snow, leaving vegetation primed to burn.

FLORIDA FIRE DANGER SPIKES AS 'EXTREME DROUGHT' REACHES 25-YEAR HIGH, AS STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly declared a State of Emergency on Sunday ahead of the extreme fire weather that is expected to also impact Colorado and Nebraska.

The dangerous weather threat is being caused by the breakdown of a strong upper-level ridge, which is allowing a series of disturbances to move across the region.

As the disturbance passes through, winds will increase. Wind gusts reached 40 to 50 mph by Monday evening.

While the winds increase, humidity will drop in some areas to around 10%.

By Tuesday, conditions are expected to worsen as strong winds develop. Some areas may see wind gusts up to 70 mph. This will increase the chances of a potential rapid wildfire to spread.

According to FOX Forecast Center, when the gusty winds combine with the dry air, dormant grass and brush will become highly combustible. Any fire that starts could spread rapidly and become very difficult to contain.

In addition to the fire risk, the high winds will likely create travel and infrastructure issues across the central corridor. Blowing dust may significantly reduce visibility along major interstates including I-70 and I-80, causing a hazardous environment for driving.

DALLAS, TEXAS - Rising waters from severe storms and torrential rain across the South left two men and their bicycle trapped on a trail along Cottonwood Creek on Saturday.

Around 1 p.m. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the water rescue at Forest Lane and Schroeder Road after the men became caught in the rising waters.

A line of severe storms has continued to bring heavy rain to parts of the Southern U.S. this weekend, and while much needed, it has prompted dangerous storms and flash flooding concerns.

South Carolina records 6 small earthquakes in Charleston area since beginning of February

South Carolina has seen several small earthquakes since February started, with the strongest being a magnitude 2.9 on Saturday.

According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), six earthquakes were reported between Feb. 3 and Feb. 12.

All the earthquakes occurred near each other in the southern part of the state, near Summerville, roughly 25 miles inland from Charleston.

MAGNITUDE 2.5 EARTHQUAKE IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA AREA WITH SHAKING REPORTED JUST DAYS AFTER PRIOR QUAKE

The strongest earthquake, a magnitude 2.9, was reported roughly 5 miles south of Summerville on Saturday, Feb. 7.

Four days before that, a magnitude 2.2 earthquake was recorded roughly 3 miles south of Summerville.

A few days later on Wednesday, a magnitude 2.5 earthquake shook 4.3 miles south of Ladson, about 6 miles south of Summerville, South Carolina.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Between the larger magnitude 2 earthquakes, some smaller magnitude 1's were reported.

First, a magnitude 1.6 earthquake, 3.8 miles south of Ladson on Monday.

Another magnitude 1.6 occurred on Wednesday, south of Centerville, South Carolina.

Finally, a magnitude 1.8 earthquake was reported near Ladson and Summerville again on Thursday at about 4 a.m. ET.

Weak to light shaking was reported around the epicenter of all six earthquakes, according to USGS data.

The region isn't a stranger to earthquakes. Back in 1886, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake was reported near Charleston, damaging or destroying many buildings and leading to 60 deaths, the USGS reported.

WHAT ARE THE LARGEST EARTHQUAKES TO STRIKE THE US?

To this day, the USGS said, the 1886 earthquake is the most damaging earthquake to occur in the Southeastern U.S.

Summerville at that time was a small town of roughly 2,000 people, the USGS said. There, many houses settled in an inclined position or were displaced by nearly two inches after the earthquake.

MONROE TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Firefighters from Monroe Township in Clermont County in Southwest Ohio rescued a horse that had fallen into an iced-over pool.

NEW YORK – Emergency management is warning people of the safety risks of melting and falling snow and ice as temperatures rise above freezing in the Big Apple this week.

The bitter cold spells that have lashed the Northeast are coming to an end, at least for now, as daytime highs in New York reach the 30s for the first time in weeks.

NORTHEAST FINALLY BEGINS TO THAW AFTER DAYS OF LIFE-THREATENING COLD

Public officials in New York City put out a warning call to remind residents of the serious safety risks that come with melting snow and ice.

Piles of frozen snow remain across the city, as snow removal continues weeks after the major winter storm dumped nearly a foot of snow in Central Park.

HISTORIC WINTER STORM KILLS OVER 80, IMPACTS MILLIONS ACROSS MORE THAN 40 STATES

The city warned that snow and ice are still present on buildings and structures and could fall as things melt.

Additionally, emergency management said ice present on bodies of water like lakes, ponds and tidal areas are unstable and shouldn't be walked or stepped on.

"Salt water ice is often thinner and weaker than freshwater ice," emergency management said in a social media post. "Never assume ice is safe."

The FOX Forecast Center said nighttime and early morning temperatures will stay colder.

New York City emergency management warned that wet sidewalks and streets could refreeze overnight, especially on bridges and shaded street blocks.

Hawaii soaked by sprawling storm as government monitors growing flood threat

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Over 10 inches of rain fell in just 24 hours this weekend across parts of Hawaii as the state is drenched by a sprawling storm system. State offices and public schools were closed Monday after Governor Josh Green issued an emergency proclamation over the weekend to free up emergency resources in the event of widespread flooding and power outages.

Maui County shared images of localized flooding and debris slides on Sunday and shelters were set up across the islands in case conditions worsened.

A Flood Watch is in effect through Monday and wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, a cold front has stalled over the Aloha State after first arriving Saturday.

HERE'S WHAT TO DO IF YOU ENCOUNTER A FLOODED ROAD

Strong trade winds are causing storms to repeatedly form and dump heavy rain, particularly along the northern slopes of the Big Island.

Laupahoehoe, some 20 miles northeast of Hilo, has already recorded more than 25 inches of rain.

Heavy rain remains the greatest concern through Monday, especially across those same windward mountain slopes.

Wind and rain are expected to subside by Tuesday as the system drifts west.

In addition to the gusty winds and flash flooding, heavy snow is expected at high altitudes on the Big Island atop Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, as temperatures will be cold enough to support it.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for those summits with snow and blowing snow expected above 11,000 feet through Monday.

While snow may seem rare in Hawaii, the Big Island volcanoes are tall enough to frequently drop below freezing during the winter.

Magnitude 2.9 earthquake jolts Charleston, South Carolina region amid reports of wide-reaching shaking

SOUTH CAROLINA, SC. – Residents across parts of South Carolina were rattled by a magnitude 2.9 earthquake this weekend as reports of shaking were felt wide near Charleston.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the earthquake struck at 10:37 p.m. ET. on Saturday night, about 3.7 miles southeast of Centreville, South Carolina at a depth of 3.23 miles.

So far, residents in the area reported feeling the shaking with reports across social media.

It’s unknown at this time if any damage, injuries or deaths have been reported.

The USGS said damaging earthquakes are rare near Charleston, but there was a magnitude 7.0 quake in the area back in 1886. That earthquake destroyed and damaged many buildings and resulted in 60 deaths.

No other information was immediately available.
